Third Congregational Church of Christ records, 1807-1885.

A collection reflecting the formation, growth, and activities of the Third Congregational Church of Christ of Portland, Maine, consisting of organizational records; treasurers' reports; financial accounts and minutes of church meetings; correspondence; records of pew sales; charges preferred against members and statements of defense; baptismal and marriage records; records of admissions, dismissals, and excommunications; also some records, 1807-1810 of the first Third Congregational Church and some miscellaneous materials pertaining to the Chapel Congregational Society. Through this collection it is possible to trace the development of the Third Congregational Church and to understand the issues it faced until the destruction of the Meeting House in the great Portland fire of 1866. Much of the social history of Maine is reflected in these papers.
